My Soul to Take 3D

What Craven is known for horror movies like this one. Its a Wes Craven movie through and through. Hes still making them, after all these years, and outside of Red Eye doesnt seem interested in using a new bag of tricks. Sure My Soul To Take is derivative and predictable, but its handled by the guy who made derivative and predicable what it is, and he does that better than just about anyone.

Do 3D Movies Deserve Higher Ratings?

We're all well aware of the subtle and subjective art of the cinematic rating system. Remove a word here, take out an innuendo or slip of the nip there, and suddenly that risque adult fare becomes palatable for familial audiences. But here's a new goodie to consider: With the rise of 3D, will we start seeing the same film receive different ratings between the second and third dimension, and what will that mean for the ever-important box office take?

It seems that overseas in Sweden, the country's Board of Film Censors doled out two different ratings for Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore. The 2D version was rated G, meaning everyone could see it without adult supervision, while the 3D version was rated PG, requiring adults to accompany tykes under the age of 7.

'The American' Celebrates Labor Day: Box Office Report September 3-6

George Clooney in 'The American'

Crime paid at the box office this Labor Day weekend. The top three movies were all about killers and thieves, led by George Clooney's 'The American.' The contemplative assassin drama earned an estimated $16.4 million over the four-day weekend and a total of $19.5 million since it opened last Wednesday.

Neck-and-neck for second place were fellow newcomer 'Machete' and last week's winner, 'Takers.' Robert Rodriguez's razor-sharp revenge thriller had an estimated four-day total of $14.0 million, compared to an estimated $13.5 million for the stylish heist caper. That's after three-day estimates yesterday placed 'Takers' just $150,000 ahead of 'Machete.' (In its second week, 'Takers' still had the highest per-screen average, with $6,120, and its Friday-to-Sunday total was just 44 percent less than last week's, suggesting that the film will have some staying power at the box office.) Indeed, 'Machete' and 'Takers' were so close that there could be another reversal by the time final studio figures are released on Tuesday.

Move Over, Terry Gilliam! Miramax is the New Curse in Town

At the end of July I wrote a post titled "The Miramax Fight is Over: Tutor Takes the Prize." Oh, what hopeful words. After a long ordeal where the Weinsteins tried to buy back their company, and every rich dude on the block contemplated a movie studio purchase, it seemed like Disney's sale of Miramax was finally complete. No more out-of-left-field twists like Rob Lowe, Studio Head. But not so fast. Yet again, Miramax is facing monetary issues, but this time it's not the Weinsteins losing investors.

Ron Tutor and Colony Capital have lost two big money-givers -- James Robinson of Morgan Creek Productions, and Jerome Swartz, a retired engineer and philanthropist.

Indie Roundup is your weekly guide to what's new and upcoming in the world of independent film. Pictured above
: Ryan Kwanten in Red Hill (see Deals after the jump).

Opening / Expanding. Why not try something different and head to the art house for the last weekend of the month? Among the limited releases that are opening or expanding:
  • Centurion. The latest from Neil Marshall (The Descent) is a bracingly violent adventure. See Scott Weinberg's review.
  • Mesrine: Killer Instinct. The first part of an epic that explores the brutal life of a French gangster in the 60s and 70s.
  • Daniel y Ana. The close relationship between a young woman, about to be married, and her teenage brother is put to the test when both are kidnapped.
  • Change of Plans. A summer dinner party reveals secret affairs of the heart in a comedy by Daniele Thompson.
  • Get Low. Robert Duvall gives an extraordinary performance as a recluse come to settle affairs with his very unusual funeral plans; Bill Murray is an accommodating funeral home owner; with Lucas Black and Sissy Spacek. Expands onto 570 screens. Check Scott Weinberg's review.
Late Summer DVD Spotlight. This week has been jam-packed with new indies on DVD, as I mentioned the other day, and that's not unusual as films jockey for attention. Unfortunately, some get missed, and that's the case with New York Street Games, a recent documentary that's now available on Amazon. Directed by Matthew Levy and narrated by Hector Elizondo, the film covers games that, mostly, I've never heard of: Boxball, Ring-o-leavio, and Skully. Folks like Keith David, Ray Romano, and Regis Philbin relate their stories. More information is available at the official site.

Neil Gaiman's 'Sandman' Gets Optioned ... Again

Big news if you're a Neil Gaiman fan or even just someone that got into comics because of the man: Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog reported on Wednesday that Warner Brothers has optioned Gaiman's Sandman comics for a tv series. The series is, at present, scheduled to be helmed by Supernatural creator Eric Kripke.

This is a story that's been a long time coming. Originally, Gaiman's seminal comic series was supposed to be turned into a movie in the mid-'90s. Warner Brothers had the rights and word was Killing Zoe director Roger Avary would direct with a script from Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, who later co-wrote Small Soldiers and the first and second Pirates of the Caribbean sequels. But the project never happened, partially because Gaiman thought the script he was handed, after numerous rewrites, was terrible. According to Wikipedia, the script was so bad, it was partially responsible for Gaiman's decision to give up writing stories about Morpheus, the titular King of Dreams, and the Endless, his immortal family.

Can You Enjoy a Film If You "Hate" the Filmmaker?

It's a topic that comes up all the time: can you appreciate the good a politician has done in the past -- once he's proven himself to be a liar? Will you cheer for an athlete who is currently under investigation for assault (or worse)? And the one that hits closest to home for me: can you enjoy a film if you think the director is, well, a big, fat freakin' ass? I certainly know where I stand (and you can probably guess my position), but instead I'll offer a few pertinent examples, and then see where we go from there...

Tupac Shakur Movie Adds Oscar-Nominated Writers

After the 2009 kerfuffle between Afeni Shakur's Amaru Entertainment and Morgan Creek was settled, production was set to begin this September on the Tupac Shakur biopic directed by Antoine Fuqua (Brooklyn's Finest, Shooter, Training Day). According to Vulture, shooting has been put off until mid-November, probably because Stephen J. Rivele and Chris Wilkinson have been brought on for rewrites. The two screenwriters earned themselves an Oscar nomination for their screenplay Nixon in 1995, and also wrote Ali together.

Rivele and Wilkinson are taking the biopic in a different direction; while it was previously a more traditional and linear tale of Shakur's life, it will now "center on the last day of Tupac's life, flashing back to show the final four years leading up to it."

The 1996 unsolved murder Shakur, the rapper, actor, and poet, has been the subject of much speculation and conspiracy theories over the years. (Some people have even "seen" the slain rapper, much like others have has Elvis sightings. Those are my favorite conspiracy theorists.)

TIFF in 60 Seconds: Woody Allen, 'Dirty Girl' and Herzog in 3D

CELEB SIGHTINGS
Woody Allen was snapped sneaking off during his new film. Couple Blake Lively and Penn Badgley had to go separate ways Saturday night as 'The Town' premiered at the same time as 'Easy A.' The only way I can slip in a link to my beloved Richard Ayoade is via a photo with Ben Stiller. Are those really oysters on Bryce Dallas Howard's 'Hereafter' premiere gown? Woody Harrelson looks creepy on the Bunraku red carpet. Peter Fonda's still an easy rider at the Best Buddies Gala. Jon Hamm smiles wide, which I haven't seen him do much of on 'Mad Men' lately.

OUR COVERAGE
Erik Childress really did not like Clint Eastwood's 'Hereafter': "Peter Morgan's ('The Queen,' 'Frost/Nixon') script beats around the bush so emphatically that it is easy to forget this is a film about what comes next at all. Instead it is more like someone who watched a bad M. Night Shyamalan film - or an M. Night Shyamalan film - and filtered it through Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's flair for perennially grief-stricken characters who will eventually cross paths by sheer coincidence."

Scott Weinberg was unsurprisingly amused by Michael Winterbottom's third collaboration with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, 'The Trip,': "Coogan and Brydon make for an endlessly watchable duo, and their car trips and frequent meals are peppered with long and very amusing volleys of British banter. Coogan is a stunningly quick wit, Brydon is an endearingly funny master of impersonations (his Michael Caine is simply wonderful), and their non-stop chat sessions are both intelligent and rather bizarre."

Weinberg also champions 'Casino Jack' for director George Hickenlooper's objective approach to his subject: "It's Hickenlooper's deft balancing act that makes the flick, well, kinda fun. And that's not really what we expect from a fact-based biopic that deals with lobbyists, finance, and the shameless fleecing of the American taxpayer."

Monika Bartyzel labels the global warming doc 'Cool It' a "must-see": "If 'An Inconvenient Truth' is our ass-kicker designed to make us put down that bottle of water and rethink our environmental attitudes, Ondi Timoner's 'Cool It' is our level-headed documentary designed to make us think rather than just react ...Timoner grabs onto one of the world's most prevalent issues and rocks it."

Bartyzel also looks at one the final films of actress Tracy Wright for her Girls on Film column: "Quite simply, 'Trigger' is to female friendship what 'Before Sunrise'/'Before Sunset' was for romance."

RV Dealer Challenges Taylor Lautner to Push-Up Contest Following Lawsuit

We all know that Twilight's Taylor Lautner is in good shape -- he spends the majority of his screen time shirtless. I'm willing to bet the buff actor could do a whole lot of push-ups if it came down to it, and it might if an RV dealership owner has his way.

Brent McMahon, owner of McMahon's RVs in Irvine, California, has challenged the young actor to a "push-up contest" to settle their legal dispute. Lautner's lawyers filed a breach of contract lawsuit against the dealer, alleging they failed to deliver a $300,000 RV to be used as a dressing room on time. When it did arrive, Lautner's camp alleges that the agreed upon work hadn't been completed.

Lautner is seeking $40,000 in damages according to McMahon, who's offered the contest as an alternative and would make a donation to Children's Hospital of Orange County for the full amount if he won the contest. Needless to say, Lautner's lawyers weren't really happy with what McMahon claims was a "facetious response."

Team Lautner has suggested that if McMahon made the donation to a charity of their choosing, this whole thing might go away. The RV dealer has vowed to defend his reputation if the case does proceed to court.

While McMahon's motives are pretty transparent -- meaning this was a great opportunity for free publicity for his business even if Lautner passes on the challenge -- it seems as though both guys have their hearts in the right place by preferring the money involved go to charity. Here's to hoping they reach a settlement that does some good for people in need and stays out the court system. If they do go for the push-ups, my money is on Lautner. Place your bets below and please gamble responsibly.

UPDATE: Pam Anderson to Shoot Sex Scene with Contest Winner for New Film?

Update: Nokia UK has quashed the sex scene rumors and has confirmed to Cinematical that the scene will be set in a hotel room, but involve a gang of ninjas racing through the building. It's a light-hearted scene and "certainly not of a sexual nature."

For a good dose of post-holiday bile, chew on this: Pamela Anderson has reportedly agreed to partake in a cinematic sex scene with a fan. Yep, if you ever watched her saucy seas sex tape with Tommy Lee and wished you could get close to the ex-Baywatch star, it's as far away as entering your name, e-mail address, and phone number ... and being a resident of the UK.

A contest brought to you by Nokia UK, the McHenry Brothers (who wrote and directed the upcoming Jackboots on Whitehall) will grab the company's new Nokia N8 and shoot a short film called The Commuter in high definition with the device. There's quick turnaround on this -- filming is slated to take place on September 20th in London.

But is it really a sex scene?

Gerard Depardieu Thinks Juliette Binoche is "Nothing"

Gerard Depardieu is at it again -- channeling his inner Serge Gainsbourg and being outrageous. The actor, never one to bite his tongue, usually saves his outbursts for politicians, but he turned on his colleagues in a recent interview with the Austrian mag Profil.

The most shocking comments were reserved for fellow star Juliette Binoche. The actress -- who's won an Oscar, a Best Actress award at this year's Cannes Film Festival for her work in Abbas Kiarostami's Certified Copy, and critical acclaim -- apparently doesn't impress Depardieu. During his interview, the actor went off on a tirade highlighted by the following question:

"Please can you explain to me what the secret of this actress is meant to be? I would really like to know why she has been so esteemed for so many years. She has nothing. Absolutely nothing!"

The Year's Top-Earning Actresses Are Almost All Wrong, But What About The Actors?

Dorothy Pomerantz of Forbes is back with another Hollywood financial report and the results of this one are far more satisfying than the last. Minus Sandra Bullock, the five actresses who earned the most cash are all wrong. They may have been deserving of the dough at one point, but now it seems as though they're being rewarded just as well for overflowing our theaters with garbage. Don't get too discouraged yet because the list of the highest-paid actors is out and it's a monumental improvement.

Snagging the top spot is Johnny Depp with a whopping $75 million haul between June 2009 and June 2010. Ever since the very first Pirates of the Caribbean film, Depp has practically been a guaranteed moneymaker. Curse of the Black Pearl earned an impressive $654.3 million worldwide, then Depp went on to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which ended up with a $475 million haul followed by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest with a staggering $1.1 billion and At World's End with $961 million. That leaves us at Public Enemies, which didn't earn quite as much, but still took in a decent $214.1 million worldwide. However, it's quite obviously Alice in Wonderland that made Depp the year's top earner. After a string of hugely successful films, I'd like to bet he received a hefty paycheck and, to top it all off, the film went on to earn $1 billion worldwide. Not every film Depp makes is fantastic, but he does manage to keep delivering above average flicks. Tack on the reliability from the moneymaking standpoint, and Depp is clearly well deserving of the top spot.

Will You Give 'Devil' A Chance Despite the M. Night Shyamalan Connection? (Poll)

If your name is Guillermo del Toro or Steven Spielberg, acting as an "executive producer" on a small film or even just somehow being associated with it gives it a type of credence and name recognition that no ad dollars can buy. Would 'The Orphanage' have gotten any traction without del Toro's name attached? Maybe not, and that would be a pity because it's a damn fine little ghost story. Of course, this can totally work against the film if it's someone like, oh, M. Night Shyamalan.

If you went to see 'Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,' you probably also saw the trailer for 'Devil,' which is "From the Mind of M. Night Shyamalan." Chances are, you also heard the infamous boos that accompanied this message. Never mind that 'Devil's connections to Shyamalan are only that he came up with the story and that he's a producer; marketing 'Devil' with his name might be the kiss of death. People were pretty worked up about 'The Last Airbender' and its casting process, and he didn't do a really great job of defending 'The Last Airbender' against charges of racism. Others just think his career going down the toilet. Plenty of pixels have been spent arguing about M. Night Shyamalan.

Far less have been about 'Devil.' Is it simply because Shyamalan is associated, or because the trailer just isn't appealing? Even the trailer that showed up on YouTube (and has since been removed) was filled with anti-Shyamalan comments. As Erik Childress wrote, "The filmmaker once ridiculously dubbed the next Spielberg now instantly taints anything he comes in contact with as reactions to the 'Devil' trailer show."

Are you going to see 'Devil' despite M. Night Shyamalan's admittedly small role in its development? Do you think its association with him has tainted it? Or are you going to go and find out which of these people are THE DEVIL?!

Hereafter

Eastwood's failure to present the afterlife with any meaning or originality is just the beginning of the many, many faults of Hereafter, a soppy, disorganized melodrama with a lot of big ideas and virtually no significance.

Watch This: A Clip From James Gunn's 'Super'

Rainn Wilson in SuperJames Gunn's 'Super,' which was part of the Toronto Film Festival's Midnight Madness series, has been winning fans right and left. Rainn Wilson plays Frank D'Arbo, an everyday guy whose wife Sarah (Liv Tyler) leaves him for a drug dealer (Kevin Bacon). Incensed, Frank transforms himself into The Crimson Bolt, a janky superhero whose main weapon is a wrench; he unwittingly attracts a desperate, manic sidekick, Libby (Ellen Page), who dubs herself Boltie.

Although this sounds a bit like 'Kick-Ass,' it's quite a bit darker than that. (Yes, even darker than a preteen hit girl with a potty mouth who makes mincemeat of bad guys.) As Scott Weinberg wrote in his review, "This is a flick that wants you to laugh at some seriously dark and weird material, but it also has the audacity to challenge the viewer to delve a little deeper. In other words, 'Super' felt like a (very funny) comedy while I was watching it -- but after a few hours had passed, I found myself contemplating the flick's darker and considerably more serious side."

'Super' was quickly picked up by IFC Films over the weekend, and will be distributed as part of its IFC Midnight series. 'Super' was one of the first films bought at the Festival.

Watch this totally crazy clip from 'Super' with The Crimson Bolt and Boltie, where they have an argument about Boltie offing a bad guy who keyed her friend's car. Maybe. She yelps, "We did it! We did it! We totally f*cking beat evil!" It's a nice little taste of a freaky flick I'm looking forward to. (P.S. You might wanna put on headphones if you're at work. Not that you watch trailers at work when you're supposed to be working, but you know, if you did, you'd wanna.)

What about you? Do you think that 'Super' will find audiences in theaters, on VOD, or on DVD eventually?

Paranormal Activity 2

Paranormal Activity 2 is a little bigger, a little scarier and a little busier than its predecessor, but more importantly, its better. New director Tod Williams has taken Oren Pelis winding, twisting first-person demon encounter and added a few more characters, creating a dual prequel/ sequel which not only offers clarity and backstory to the original but also a chilling vision of its own which celebrates and polishes more than imitates and muddle

Zach Galifianakis Gets Zach Galafianakis'd In Hilariously Awkward Interview With Gordon Keith

Entertainment reporters interview celebrities ? it's in the job description. Sometimes these interviews go incredibly well, and sometimes they go incredibly poorly. Sometimes, they fall into a no man's land of awkwardness that few people are likely to encounter in their lifetime.
Gordon Keith's interview with Zach Galifianakis falls into the latter category. But beyond being [...]

Did Tony Blair Plagiarize 'The Queen'?

Stephen Frears' 2006 offering The Queen sees Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II. After the death of Princess Diana, she retreats from the public eye, not addressing the demise of "The People's Princess." But there's a newly elected Prime Minister, Tony Blair (Michael Sheen), who believes she should speak to her public, and meets with her to try and convince her to break her silence. Screenwriter Peter Morgan tried to imagine the meeting, and with no record or accounts to give him a truthful basis, he mused that the Queen says: "You are my 10th prime minister, Mr. Blair. My first was Winston Churchill."

Far from a "how d'you do?," the chances of Morgan being right with his guess are slim to none. Nevertheless, in Tony Blair's memoirs, A Journey, he recounts a very similar interaction.

Aaron Johnson Playing 'Jack The Giant Killer' For Director Bryan Singer?

Bryan Singer is climbing up a beanstalk to slay a giant, but he needs a little bit of help. Understandably, his giant slayer of choice is somebody who has already proven himself capable of kicking ass, but the search is by no means over for "Jack The Giant Killer."
