'The Hunger Games' Director List Grows Longer

Filed under: Deals, Lionsgate Films, Movie News, CinematicalI was certain the next bit of information on The Hunger Games adaption was going to be the official choice to direct, but it looks as though we're even further from that decision because now three more names are being added to the list of potentials. The news comes from Deadline who originally reported that Gary Ross, Sam Mendes and David Slade were the final three, but now is saying that Andrew Adamson, Rupert Sanders and Susanna White are being considered as well.

Odds are the new additions are far less familiar names than the original trio. Sanders is busy working on his first feature film, an Appian Way-produced thriller The Low Dweller, but you might have already caught some of his other work. Sanders is an award-winning commercial director and the man responsible for the Halo 3: ODST spot released back in September of 2009. While that commercial is quite impressive, as are the advertisements he did for Halo 3 Believe and Monster.com, Adamson is the one with more relevant experience. He directed both Shrek and Shrek 2, but it's his time spent working on the first two Chronicles of Narnia films that would likely help him tackle The Hunger Games. Lastly we've got White who's got a handful of shorts and TV shows to her name as well as the recent release Nanny McPhee Returns.

Gary Ross Now Frontrunner to Direct 'The Hunger Games' Movie

Filed under: Deals, Lionsgate Films, Movie News, CinematicalWhen the list of directors being considered to direct 'The Hunger Games' movie was revealed, David Slade stood out immediately. While I was certain he was the man for the job, I also mentioned that all of the options would make for fine a helmer. Well, I lied. According to Deadline, Gary Ross is the candidate in early talks for the gig and I'm somewhat disappointed.

With darker material like '30 Days of Night' under his belt and having had a great teen-friendly franchise experience with 'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse', it just made sense for Slade to get the position. On the bright side, if I had to choose between Ross and the other contenders - Sam Mendes, Andrew Adamson, Rupert Sanders and Susanna White - I'd chose Ross in a heartbeat. In terms of directing, Ross is two for two. He directed the 1998 film 'Pleasantville' as well as the Academy Award nominated 'Seabiscuit'. I wouldn't say either proves Ross can handle the subject matter in 'The Hunger Games', but they do justify the guy is a top notch director and worthy of the job.

Those of you who are unfamiliar with Suzanne Collins' book might be wondering: What's the big deal with this film anyway. Well, first off, you shouldn't be asking that question; you should go pick up the book. It's a downright fantastic read and the book's loyal fan base proves it. Lionsgate and Color Force's Nina Jacobson have a potential franchise on their hands and they know it. Collins was able to draw readers of all ages in for the first installment and kept them hooked with the second, 'Catching Fire,'and the recently released series finale, 'Mockingjay.' Comedy is built on exaggeration, either a little or a whole lot. You Again wrestles with itself until it ends up with some. With a little more willpower or a little less gusto, it could have been better than below-average. As compromised, its definitely not.

Did Tony Blair Plagiarize 'The Queen'?

Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy, Politics, Movie News, CinematicalStephen Frears' 2006 offering The Queen sees Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II. After the death of Princess Diana, she retreats from the public eye, not addressing the demise of "The People's Princess." But there's a newly elected Prime Minister, Tony Blair (Michael Sheen), who believes she should speak to her public, and meets with her to try and convince her to break her silence. Screenwriter Peter Morgan tried to imagine the meeting, and with no record or accounts to give him a truthful basis, he mused that the Queen says: "You are my 10th prime minister, Mr. Blair. My first was Winston Churchill."

Far from a "how d'you do?," the chances of Morgan being right with his guess are slim to none. Nevertheless, in Tony Blair's memoirs, A Journey, he recounts a very similar interaction. Continue Reading

Indie Roundup: 'Street Games, 'Want Money,' 'Red Hill'

Filed under: Deals, New Releases, Distribution, Cinematical Indie, Movie News, New Releases, Cinematical

Indie Roundup is your weekly guide to what's new and upcoming in the world of independent film. Pictured above: Ryan Kwanten in Red Hill (see Deals after the jump).

Opening / Expanding. Why not try something different and head to the art house for the last weekend of the month? Among the limited releases that are opening or expanding:

Centurion. The latest from Neil Marshall (The Descent) is a bracingly violent adventure. See Scott Weinberg's review.
Mesrine: Killer Instinct. The first part of an epic that explores the brutal life of a French gangster in the 60s and 70s.
Daniel y Ana. The close relationship between a young woman, about to be married, and her teenage brother is put to the test when both are kidnapped.
Change of Plans. A summer dinner party reveals secret affairs of the heart in a comedy by Daniele Thompson.
Get Low. Robert Duvall gives an extraordinary performance as a recluse come to settle affairs with his very unusual funeral plans; Bill Murray is an accommodating funeral home owner; with Lucas Black and Sissy Spacek. Expands onto 570 screens. Check Scott Weinberg's review.

Late Summer DVD Spotlight. This week has been jam-packed with new indies on DVD, as I mentioned the other day, and that's not unusual as films jockey for attention. Unfortunately, some get missed, and that's the case with New York Street Games, a recent documentary that's now available on Amazon. Directed by Matthew Levy and narrated by Hector Elizondo, the film covers games that, mostly, I've never heard of: Boxball, Ring-o-leavio, and Skully. Folks like Keith David, Ray Romano, and Regis Philbin relate their stories. More information is available at the official site. Continue Reading

Jesse Eisenberg Says He's 'Probably Excited' to Do 'Zombieland 2'

Mark Zuckerberg is itching to kill the undead. Kind of.
Jesse Eisenberg, who plays the punk/genius/billionaire man-child behind Facebook in David Fincher's upcoming "The Social Network," recently told MTV News that he's game for a "Zombieland" sequel. Eisenberg starred as a geeky, Emma Stone-loving destroyer of the undead in the delightfully graphic 2009 horror-comedy; he says [...]

Do 3D Movies Deserve Higher Ratings?

Filed under: Box Office, Tech Stuff, Politics, Movie News, UK Box Office, Cinematical, UK Box OfficeWe're all well aware of the subtle and subjective art of the cinematic rating system. Remove a word here, take out an innuendo or slip of the nip there, and suddenly that risque adult fare becomes palatable for familial audiences. But here's a new goodie to consider: With the rise of 3D, will we start seeing the same film receive different ratings between the second and third dimension, and what will that mean for the ever-important box office take?

It seems that overseas in Sweden, the country's Board of Film Censors doled out two different ratings for Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore. The 2D version was rated G, meaning everyone could see it without adult supervision, while the 3D version was rated PG, requiring adults to accompany tykes under the age of 7. Continue Reading

'Transformers' Kurtzman to Direct Dysfunctional Family Drama

Filed under: Drama, Deals, Scripts, Newsstand, Dreamworks, Steven Spielberg, Movie News, CinematicalIt seems like just yesterday when Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci, the screenwriters for summer smashes like Star Trek, Transformers (2007) and its 2009 sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, were in the trades every other day with new projects. A Star Trek sequel! Cowboys and Aliens! A view-master movie!

Instead, Kurtzman's been given the go-ahead by DreamWorks and Steven Spielberg to direct his first full-length feature, Welcome to People, which is based on a script he wrote with Orci and director Jody Lambert. According to Vulture, Kurtzman decided to pitch his old script once he and Orci got hot in Hollywood, lest he be relegated to genre flicks.

Welcome to People is definitely not action or alien-friendly, according to what Vulture and other outlets like Heat Vision are describing.

Vulture reports:

Welcome to People tells the story of a struggling twentysomething man who, after flying home to L.A. for the funeral of his estranged record-producer father, discovers that the will stipulates that he must deliver $150,000 in cash to a 30-year-old alcoholic sister he never knew existed, and her troubled 12-year-old son. Determined to keep the money to solve his own problems, he's nonetheless fascinated by his unknown kin and makes contact with the two without revealing who he really is.
Will an old script that they're getting made by virtue of their success on other projects really fly? Although Kurtzman and Orci have proved their value on action/sci-fi fare, Welcome to People sounds melodramatic and what younger screenwriters come up with a la Zach Braff's Garden State where everyone takes themselves very seriously and there's a type of everything-and-the-kitchen-sink dysfunction junction. Then again, Steven Spielberg's blessing carries a weight in Hollywood like few others, so perhaps the script itself has more dimension than what these tidbits suggest.

And in the distance, I hear the wails, "What about the view-master movie, dammit?!"

Move Over, Terry Gilliam! Miramax is the New Curse in Town

Filed under: Executive shifts, Celebrities and Controversy, Miramax, Movie News, Cinematical

At the end of July I wrote a post titled "The Miramax Fight is Over: Tutor Takes the Prize." Oh, what hopeful words. After a long ordeal where the Weinsteins tried to buy back their company, and every rich dude on the block contemplated a movie studio purchase, it seemed like Disney's sale of Miramax was finally complete. No more out-of-left-field twists like Rob Lowe, Studio Head. But not so fast. Yet again, Miramax is facing monetary issues, but this time it's not the Weinsteins losing investors.

Ron Tutor and Colony Capital have lost two big money-givers -- James Robinson of Morgan Creek Productions, and Jerome Swartz, a retired engineer and philanthropist. Continue Reading

The Romantics

There are plenty of films with lead characters who are pure scum of the Earth, characters that you would punch in the face should you ever run into them on the street. But while the movie may play up that central characters more negative aspects, there are usually positive elements to balance them, either in the form of a supporting character or weakness. The Romantics has plenty of the former but none of the latter. In spite of the films strong performances, the story is simply too run of the mill to work and the characters will leave a bad taste in your mouth. Its simply a lot of wasted potential.

Filed under: Casting, Deals, Disney, Harry Potter, Remakes and Sequels, Cinematical Indie, Trailers and Clips, Trailers and Clips, Movie News, Cinematical

- Former child actress Cammie King Conlon (pictured), who as Rhett and Scarlett's daughter, Bonnie Blue Butler, had a very memorable onscreen death in Gone With the Wind has sadly died for real at the age of 76. She also voiced the young doe Faline in Disney's Bambi.

- TIFF acquisition news: Sony Pictures Classics has picked up U.S. rights to the Mordecai Richler adaptation Barney's Version, which stars Paul Giamatti and Dustin Hoffman.

- Ciarán Hinds, who plays Aberforth Dumbledore in both parts of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, will reunite with Daniel Radcliffe for the Victorian ghost story adaptation The Woman in Black (which will not be 3D) as a landowner who counsels the young lawyer. Also joining the cast is Janet McTeer, who'll play Hinds' character's wife.

- Adam McKay claims the heavy web-present demand for Anchorman 2 has "helped" put the sequel back into Paramount's possibility pile, though there are no plans or a greenlight as of yet. Still, if Hollywood's actually listening, now's the time to campaign for all those other movies you want made (The Incredibles 2? The Restaurant at the End of the Universe? 'Transformers 3' Extra Hurt and in Critical Condition

Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy, Cinematical

I've always assumed that the Transformers films were more painful to watch than to make, but apparently that may not be the case. CBS 2 Chicago is reporting that an extra on the set of Transformers 3 was seriously injured during a stunt on the film's Indiana set last night. Gabriela Cedillo - a 24 year-old Chicago resident - had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital after an object pierced the windshield of the car she was driving and struck her in the head. The car - Cedillo's personal 2006 Toyota - slammed into the road's median barrier after impact and then scraped along the concrete divide for almost a mile before finally coming to a stop.

The strange part of all of this is not that another person was injured during a Michael Bay shoot (his dialogue scenes tend to feature more explosions than some small wars), but that Cedillo is supposedly not a member of the production's stunt crew. The CBS report suggests that she was merely an extra, but why would an extra be participating in a vehicular stunt scene, and driving her own car no less? The accident was serious enough to shutter production for the day, but thus neither Bay nor Paramount have offered any comment (if Cedillo were a puppy, Bay would no doubt already be on the warpath. Time may be on Oliver Stones mind but he, like everyone else, still hasnt figured out a more useful way for us to spend it than watching movies about how we really ought to do something. Call me when we figure out what that something is, and Ill be first in line on our march to the capital. Until then theres Wall Street 2, a spectacularly well made film without any real answers, and a lot of questions which have already been asked, but should probably be asked again until someone comes up with a way to answer them.

Tupac Shakur Movie Adds Oscar-Nominated Writers

Filed under: Drama, Deals, Scripts, Distribution, Newsstand, Movie News, CinematicalAfter the 2009 kerfuffle between Afeni Shakur's Amaru Entertainment and Morgan Creek was settled, production was set to begin this September on the Tupac Shakur biopic directed by Antoine Fuqua (Brooklyn's Finest, Shooter, Training Day). According to Vulture, shooting has been put off until mid-November, probably because Stephen J. Rivele and Chris Wilkinson have been brought on for rewrites. The two screenwriters earned themselves an Oscar nomination for their screenplay Nixon in 1995, and also wrote Ali together.

Rivele and Wilkinson are taking the biopic in a different direction; while it was previously a more traditional and linear tale of Shakur's life, it will now "center on the last day of Tupac's life, flashing back to show the final four years leading up to it."

The 1996 unsolved murder Shakur, the rapper, actor, and poet, has been the subject of much speculation and conspiracy theories over the years. (Some people have even "seen" the slain rapper, much like others have has Elvis sightings. Those are my favorite conspiracy theorists.) Continue Reading

Featuring an enormous cast, numerous overlapping plots, several car chases and shootouts and even a stickup at Fenway Park, The Town is a bit overly ambitious and sprawling, but also quite a thrill. Uwe Boll Defends 'Auschwitz' Movie With Typical Fury

Filed under: Documentary, Drama, Independent, Celebrities and Controversy, Newsstand, Trailers and Clips, Trailers and Clips, Movie News, CinematicalCinematical's David Ehrlich wrote about Uwe Boll's newest project 'Auschwitz' earlier this week, noting, "As a Jew, a cinephile, and a person, I fervently believe that no historical episode should be protected from filmic representation, but after watching the NSFW trailer even Neo-Nazis might be shaking their heads going, 'Seriously Uwe, I think they've been through enough.'" After watching the trailer myself, all I have to add is, "Blergh."

An intrepid reporter over at Vice made contact with Uwe Boll -- first through Facebook and then over the phone -- to discuss his movie. Boll, who has engaged in boxing matches with his critics, had a lot to say. Like, a lot. And it wasn't just his detractors he's furious at, but also Germany as a nation and its attitude towards portraying the Holocaust, according to him.

Boll is not known for pulling punches verbally either, and the reporter barely had a chance to get a word in edgewise during his rants, which include choice bits about his educational background ("WHAT THE F*CK! Why do I get counted as an idiot, I'm a Doctor of Literature! I studied economy!") and much more.

Boll's anger isn't just directed towards his critics, though, but towards his homeland, Germany. Continue Reading

And the one that hits closest to home for me: can you enjoy a film if you think the director is, well, a big, fat freakin' ass? 'Tomorrow, When the War Began' and the Mega Popular Australian Franchise You've Probably Never Heard Of

Filed under: Action, Paramount, Box Office, Remakes and Sequels, Cinematical Indie, War, UK Box Office, Cinematical, UK Box OfficeMany here have jokingly called it "that other remake of 'Red Dawn,'" but 'Tomorrow, When the War Began' is its own entity, and a major one at that, at least in Australia where it not only opened at #1 a couple weeks ago but also there became the highest-grossing domestic film not financed by Hollywood. The film, similar to 'Red Dawn', is about a band of high school students defending their country against an invading army. It's based on a series of popular young adult novels by John Marsden and is the directorial debut of Stuart Beattie, best known for co-writing the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movies.

Because of its success Down Under, the 'Tomorrow' franchise will continue with sequels, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Beattie is set to return as writer and director of at least two more films adapted from the seven-book franchise, though nothing has been officially greenlit. While I assume they'll be based on the next two literary titles, 'The Dead of the Night' and 'The Third Day, The Frost' (aka 'A Killing Frost,' to American readers), this is not confirmed. What is known is the two installments will be shot back-to-back and the first film's young stars, including breakout Caitlin Stasey and 'An American Haunting' actress Rachel Hurd-Wood, will reportedly reprise their roles -- unless any die in the original, which even if I knew I wouldn't spoil. Weekend Box Office: 'Resident Evil 4' Dominates by Default

Filed under: New Releases, Box Office, Movie News, UK Box Office, New Releases, Cinematical, UK Box OfficeOne wonders how many of the millions of people who went to see Resident Evil: Afterlife this weekend actually have any investment in this woebegone franchise, and for how many the notion of a new Resident Evil film simply stands for something that they want, namely hyped-up, futuristic zombie-killing action. I mean, I've seen the first three films (not yet the fourth, though I will eventually go, against my better judgment), but I'll be damned if I have any idea where the saga of Alice, the Umbrella Corporation, et al., currently stands. All I remember is that the third movie was directed by Russell Mulcahy (Highlander), which at the time I found sort of humorously appropriate.

Anyway, Afterlife had the traditionally slow post-Labor Day weekend to itself, and it capitalized. Its $27.7 million take is a franchise record, and the film, shot in apparently gorgeous 3D, will surely turn a profit. (If you're skeptical, be advised that each of the first three films handily outperformed its fair-to-middling domestic take overseas.) And since there is absolutely nothing (at least plotwise) stopping Sony from churning out installment after Resident Evil installment, we can all look forward to nos. 5, 6, etc., ad inf.

There's not much else to report. Last weekend's big debuts, The American and Machete, niche-y to begin with (and correspondingly low-cost, which is good), took the expected second-weekend hits. Takers is the first post-summer success story, sticking around second place and heading toward $60 million domestic. The Last Exorcism has not held up nearly so well, but, having no budget, it's done its job.

The chart after the jump.

The Virginity Hit

The Virginity Hit, written and directed by Huck Botko and Andrew Gurland, isnt a complete waste thanks to the occasional funny scene and a healthy dose of teen raunch, but it isnt a success. Theres potential here if Botko and Gurland had taken the time to flesh out and change some of the scripts more worn out elements. As it stands, the use of a shaky hand-held camera to film it is an interesting way to reach out to the YouTube generation, but that gimmick isnt worth anything if you dont have the substance to back it up.

Can You Enjoy a Film If You "Hate" the Filmmaker?

Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy, Cinematical

It's a topic that comes up all the time: can you appreciate the good a politician has done in the past -- once he's proven himself to be a liar? Will you cheer for an athlete who is currently under investigation for assault (or worse)? And the one that hits closest to home for me: can you enjoy a film if you think the director is, well, a big, fat freakin' ass? I certainly know where I stand (and you can probably guess my position), but instead I'll offer a few pertinent examples, and then see where we go from there...

Will You Give 'Devil' A Chance Despite the M. Night Shyamalan Connection? (Poll)

Filed under: Drama, Horror, Thrillers, New Releases, Universal, Celebrities and Controversy, Polls, Movie News, New Releases, Cinematical

If your name is Guillermo del Toro or Steven Spielberg, acting as an "executive producer" on a small film or even just somehow being associated with it gives it a type of credence and name recognition that no ad dollars can buy. Would 'The Orphanage' have gotten any traction without del Toro's name attached? Maybe not, and that would be a pity because it's a damn fine little ghost story. Of course, this can totally work against the film if it's someone like, oh, M. Night Shyamalan.

If you went to see 'Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,' you probably also saw the trailer for 'Devil,' which is "From the Mind of M. Night Shyamalan." Chances are, you also heard the infamous boos that accompanied this message. Never mind that 'Devil's connections to Shyamalan are only that he came up with the story and that he's a producer; marketing 'Devil' with his name might be the kiss of death. People were pretty worked up about 'The Last Airbender' and its casting process, and he didn't do a really great job of defending 'The Last Airbender' against charges of racism. Others just think his career going down the toilet. Plenty of pixels have been spent arguing about M. Night Shyamalan.

Far less have been about 'Devil.' Is it simply because Shyamalan is associated, or because the trailer just isn't appealing? Even the trailer that showed up on YouTube (and has since been removed) was filled with anti-Shyamalan comments. As Erik Childress wrote, "The filmmaker once ridiculously dubbed the next Spielberg now instantly taints anything he comes in contact with as reactions to the 'Devil' trailer show."

Are you going to see 'Devil' despite M. Night Shyamalan's admittedly small role in its development? Do you think its association with him has tainted it? Or are you going to go and find out which of these people are THE DEVIL?!

Going the Distance

Going the Distance is by no means perfect, but it's light years beyond the average rom-com, bracingly honest and genuinely funny about the ups and downs of relationships. Barrymore and Long, once a real-life couple and now who-knows-what, have a real chemistry that complements their well-written, realistic characters, and even when the movie falls apart around them in the third act, we root for these two crazy kids and their shot at romance

UPDATE: Pam Anderson to Shoot Sex Scene with Contest Winner for New Film?

Filed under: RumorMonger, Celebrities and Controversy, Contests, 'Fone Finds, CinematicalUpdate: Nokia UK has quashed the sex scene rumors and has confirmed to Cinematical that the scene will be set in a hotel room, but involve a gang of ninjas racing through the building. It's a light-hearted scene and "certainly not of a sexual nature."

For a good dose of post-holiday bile, chew on this: Pamela Anderson has reportedly agreed to partake in a cinematic sex scene with a fan. Yep, if you ever watched her saucy seas sex tape with Tommy Lee and wished you could get close to the ex-Baywatch star, it's as far away as entering your name, e-mail address, and phone number ... and being a resident of the UK.

A contest brought to you by Nokia UK, the McHenry Brothers (who wrote and directed the upcoming Jackboots on Whitehall) will grab the company's new Nokia N8 and shoot a short film called The Commuter in high definition with the device. There's quick turnaround on this -- filming is slated to take place on September 20th in London.

But is it really a sex scene?

Five Actors Who Could Play Al Capone in This New Biopic

Filed under: Casting, Deals, New Releases, Movie News, New Releases, Cinematical

Al Capone has been dead for over 60 years, but he continues to live on through our fascination with gangsters and debonair criminals. The Prohibition Era kingpin has been the subject of countless films over the years, but Warner Bros. is betting that audiences want more of the portly gangster with their recent acquisition of the screenplay 'Cicero'.

Walon Green, who wrote the screenplay for Peckinpah's classic western 'The Wild Bunch', penned this new script, which follows Capone's rise from his poor Brooklyn neighborhood to becoming the biggest gangster in Chicago. The title refers to the nearby town of Cicero, Illinois -- where Capone set up his operations so they were outside of the Chicago city limits. In 1924, he took over the city's government.

Early script reviews are describing the tale as a throwback to the classic gangster films of the 1930's -- with many comparing it to the James Cagney classic, 'The Public Enemy'. If that turns out to be true, consider me officially intrigued.

No director has been linked to the project as of yet, but the real issue here is one of casting. Who do you get to play Al Capone? De Niro did a fantastic job in 'The Untouchables', but recasting him doesn't seem likely to work. With that in mind, we picked a few actors who might be interesting in the role.

Hit the jump to see our selection and then weigh in with your own choices.

The Next Must-See Pot Comedy: 'We're the Millers'

Filed under: Comedy, Deals, New Line, Scripts, Newsstand, Movie News, CinematicalIs any pot comedy a must-see? I say yes. Not because I'm a pothead, although unlike Clinton, I have inhaled, but because potheads are hilarious! It's been a while since we've had a good stoner comedy. Smiley Face was actually kind of frustrating in the way that stoners occasionally are. There's Leaves of Grass, starring Edward Norton twins, but it will only be in theaters for a very limited run in September with a DVD release in October, and it's not really a pothead comedy per se, anyway. Hopefully, this dry spell will soon be over with New Line's We're the Millers (no relation).

The L.A. Times has the exclusive details about the plot, which is about "a veteran pot dealer [who] decides to create a fake family (the eponymous Millers) to move a large shipment of marijuana across the U.S. border from Mexico." Will wacky hijinks ensue? Will he forget where he put his keys? Will he start giggling at the border crossing? Who knows! I can't wait to find out.

So far, the directors in the running are Charlie St. Cloud's Burr Steers, or Sean Anders and John Morris, the guys who wrote Hot Tub Time Machine and Sex Drive. Anders also directed Sex Drive. You can guess who I'm rooting for to take the reins, right? Not the one who directed the Zac Efron weepy.

The script was originally written by the guys behind Wedding Crashers, Steve Faber and Bob Fisher, and is now getting a polish from Rich Rinaldi and Dan Fybel. Rinaldi and Fybel wrote a few eps of The Sarah Silverman Show, including "High, It's Sarah," which indicates that they're rather familiar with the topic. Watch a clip of "High, It's Sarah" on Amazon
and YouTube. Apparently, Steve Buscemi was originally going to star, but there's no more news on that front for now. Do it, Steve! Do it!

Watch This: Juliette Binoche Says Grard Depardieu Might Be Jealous of Her

Filed under: Foreign Language, RumorMonger, Celebrities and Controversy, Trailers and Clips, Trailers and Clips, Cinematical

A few days ago, we shared a story about Gérard Depardieu calling Juliette Binoche "nothing" in an Austrian magazine article. It was a pretty out of the blue and uncalled for tirade -- and pretty personal to boot. In the interim, everyone's wondered what Binoche thought of his comments -- and Empire Online caught up with the actress and got her take on the whole debacle.

Anyone hoping Binoche would look into the camera and offer up a hearty "F you!" to Depardieu is bound to be disappointed. The actress takes the high road and comes across as quite lovely and even more sympathetic in her brief response. Ever the promoter, she manages to take the opportunity to tie things back to her new film, Certified Copy, while saying she's not sure what prompted the outburst in the first place.

The actress states that it's Depardieu's right not to like her and speculates that maybe something in her provocative new film offended his masculine sensibilities. She says she felt detached from the comments because even though she bore the brunt of his anger, it seems to have more to do with something going on inside of him. In fact, the only even remotely controversial comment she makes is wondering if it was jealousy on the actor's part that she's had too much success. But even that comes across innocently in light of what Depardieu said about her and in the fact that she doesn't point out she has an Oscar while he doesn't.

If Depardieu is smart this will be the last we hear of this story save for a piece on his subsequent apology -- but I can easily envision another scathing response from him far easier than I can him burying the hatchet. Think Depardieu will settle down now or will this inspire a new outburst? Hit the jump for Binoche's video response.

Ronald Reagan Gets a Big-Screen Biopic

Filed under: Drama, Deals, Scripts, Politics, Movie News, CinematicalGet ready -- it's time for our 40th president to return to the big screen. One Mr. Ronald Reagan, Hollywood actor, California Governor, and leader of the free world through the '80s, is getting a biopic. Avoiding puppets and "The Land of Confusion," the biopic will be a comprehensive story about his life from childhood to presidency, an amalgamation of two bestselling biographies by Paul Kengor: The Crusader and God and Ronald Reagan.

And this won't be like the last stab at Reagan's life, the miniseries Reagans with James Brolin. Instead of whipping up anger for "left-wing bias," this project is getting ready for a more celebratory affair.

Neil Marshall Makes Underground Supper Clubs Horrific

Filed under: Horror, Thrillers, Deals, Scripts, Movie News, CinematicalIf there's one thing I want to pluck off my to-do list and move to my have-done list in the very near future, it's underground supper clubs. Rather than going out to a fancy restaurant to gorge on any old meal, many are falling victim to the lure of secret, one-of-a-kind foodie adventures. Not advertised or set in one locale day after day, these clubs exist outside the law (no food inspections and stringent guidelines apply), moving from place to place and often offering up unique fare you'd rarely see on a regular old menu. Sign up, wait, and soon you're dining with a handful of strangers in an intimate locale. Sometimes it's just straight-forward chef creations, and sometimes it's something you might not be used to, like horse, or maybe crunchy l'il insects.

Naturally, Hollywood wants in, and they see it as the perfect venue for horror.
