Days after suffering a tragic miscarriage, Lily Allen was rushed to the hospital with a dangerous blood-poisoning condition. The British pop star, 25, checked into a clinic on Friday to treat her potentially lethal medical condition, called septicaemia. The common but mysterious condition is usually the result of an infection following surgery or injury; it begins with flu-like symptoms, but can result in organ failure if not treated immediately. Among those who have died of complications from septicaemia are actor Christopher Reeve, Bee Gee Maurice Gibb and Pope John Paul II.
Allen, fortunately, has been responding well to antibiotics. According to her rep, the singer has been on the mend as "her condition continues to improve." People says that supportive fan letters are helping Allen through this difficult time.
And it is a difficult time, indeed. On Monday, Allen revealed that she had experienced her second miscarriage in less than three years. Her pregnancy was quite far along -- six months -- and Allen had already told the media that pregnancy complications had her terrified of losing the baby. The miscarriage may have increased Allen's risk of infection, leading to her current condition. She and boyfriend Sam Cooper are, understandably, requesting privacy as she recovers -- although Allen checked into Twitter on Friday to thank her 2.5 million followers for "all your kind messages."
