'Glee' Extra Nicole Crowther Fired for Tweeting Prom Episode Spoiler

'Glee' Extra Nicole Crowther Fired for Tweeting Prom Episode Spoiler

Last week, an extra on Glee came under fire for revealing top-secret information from an upcoming epsidoe. Did Cory Monteith (Finn) or Lea Michele (Rachel) get run over by a bus? Well, no. Did someone break into Jane Lynch's (Sue) trailer and steal all her track suits? Uh, no. Well, what was it then?

Nicole Crowther, a 21-year-old aspiring actress and former extra on Glee (Fox, Tuesday, 8 p.m. ET), sent a cryptic tweet about who the prom queen and king will be in the May 10 episode. If you are outraged by this too-early disclosure, then you are a true Gleek, and you should not click here to find out who the lucky couple is. Then again, if you are that Gleeky, you've probably heard it by now anyway.

As for Crowther, she swiftly learned just how sensitive Glee co-creator Brad Falchuk is about plot leaks. "Who are you to spoil something talented people have spent months to create?" he counter-tweeted. "Hope you're qualified to do something besides work in entertainment."

This overreaction didn't serve Falchuk well, however. It gave credibility to secondhand gossip being passed on by someone not even associated with the prom episode. Crowther had merely heard the tidbit from someone at a dinner party, and she herself didn't know whether it was true. But if people weren't likely to believe Crowther's claim, they sure do now.

Whether or not Falchuk overreacted to Crowther's tweet, his clichéd threat -- You'll never work in this town again! -- has had repercussions. The agency that placed her in the Glee gig suspended her for three weeks, and she's not welcome back as an extra on Glee or any other Fox show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Crowther says that entertainment types have been told to drop her as a friend on Facebook. The fiasco has prompted the young actress to issue a public statement in her own defense.

"I didn't even know if the girl I heard it from was joking or telling the truth," said Crowther. "I was not an extra for that scene and haven't been an extra on the show since Oct. 2010... I am truly sorry for any trouble I have caused. But that was never what I intended. I wanted to be just another speculator weighing in." She added: "I didn't violate any code of ethics or violate a contract."

Speaking of that, 20th Century Fox Television has implicitly backed her up on this detail: They are looking into changing the contracts that extras sign, so that leaking plot points on Twitter would be a violation in the future.

So Falchuk can't take legal action. (The show did attempt some damage control: In an attempt to confuse fans, Monteith quickly tweeted this fresh-from-the-set-looking photo of himself and Dianna Agron, looking prom king and queeny.) And Falchuk can obviously still make Crowther's life miserable. Let's hope he eventually calms down, and lets this very young woman off the hook. It's a TV show, dude.
