John Galliano entered a courtroom in Paris today to face charges of "public insults based on origin, religious affiliation, race or ethnicity."
The former head of Christian Dior faces a possible sentencing of six months in jail for hurling anti-Semitic remarks at a Jewish couple in France this February. He told them he loved Hitler and made references to how their people were "gassed."
Such talk, labeled as "racial prejudice," is illegal in that country.
Galliano has since apologized for the outburst, but it will take more than that to get the fashion guru off.
Aurelien Hamelle, Galliano's attorney, tells E! News she'll portray her client as an addict.
"He had a triple addiction to alcohol, benzodiazepine (Valium) and sleeping pills... The combined effect of these drugs is a state of complete and utter abandon," Hamelle said. "When he was in that state he had no way of knowing or remembering what he said."
A verdict on the trial will likely not be announced for a couple months.
