When Eddie Murphy bowed out of hosting the 2012 Oscars Wednesday, it was clear that the Academy needed to act quickly to replace him. Turns out it was Crystal clear.
Billy Crystal has announced via his Twitter account that he's signed on for a ninth stint as Academy Awards emcee. "Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions," the 63-year-old actor informed his 61,000 (and now growing) Twitter followers Thursday. "Looking forward to the show."
Brian Grazer, who was just tapped to replace director Brett Ratner as producer of the 2012 telecast, has yet to confirm Crystal's announcement. But unless Billy is pulling our collective leg, he will be taking the stage as emcee when the Oscar telecast airs Feb. 26 on ABC.
In case you haven't been following this week's Oscars drama, Ratner resigned as producer on Tuesday, after coming under fire for his flippant use of a gay slur while discussing his new film Tower Heist. Then, on Wednesday, Murphy -- who'd been brought into the fold by his pal Ratner -- bailed as host.
What a difference 24 hours makes. With uber-producer Grazer (Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind) now spearheading the telecast and Crystal -- widely hailed as the best Oscars host ever -- emceeing, the 84th Academy Awards are looking golden. Just the way it should be.
