Christina Aguilera is leaving The Voice next season, but doesn't plan on being away for too long. The pop star is taking a break from coaching the talent competition to promote her new album, Lotus. (She and Cee Lo Green will be temporarily replaced by musicians Shakira and Usher.) Though she's excited to get on the road, she says she'll miss a lot of things about the NBC show -- including fellow coaches Adam Levine and Blake Shelton.
"At this point in season three, all of us coaches have truly bonded," Aguilera tells E! News in an interview airing Monday. "When me and Adam are on breaks backstage, you know, we're writing profanity with my red lipstick all over Blake's trailer while he's napping inside."
"It's like we have definitely, literally become like brother and sister," she says of Maroon 5 singer Levine. "We goof around and play around. I'm going to miss it."
Leaving the show, says Aguilera, was a "bittersweet" decision, but a necessary one.
"In order to remain great coaches and to stay relevant, we have to go out and we have to still tour, see our fans one-on-one," she explains. "I have to feel creatively fulfilled in order for me to then do my job as a coach and be on that show."
Not only has The Voice been a positive experience for Aguilera: it inspired her latest album. In an interview with MTV News, the pop star said that the show gave her new creative energy by allowing her to "see through the eyes of aspiring artists at the beginning of their journey, to be part of their journey, to see the hunger in their eyes and to sort of regain some of that back for myself."
Meanwhile, one of the new Voice coaches can't wait to experience life in the swivel chair. On Friday night, Usher told MTV News that he's "really excited" about participating in the show.
"It's the type of show that I feel really sets up an artist and makes it about what matters most first: the voice," said the R&B star. "Everything else comes afterwards in terms of the mentors; that's what gives the personality, gives the opportunity to be an artist who will excel and transcend culture and also be able to tell an incredible story in music. So I like being able to be at that place. I love being a mentor."
