The 84th Annual Academy Awards nominations were revealed Tuesday morning, with its usual mix of front-runners and surprises. The Hunger Games star (and former Oscar nominee) Jennifer Lawrence helped announce this year's crop of nominees. Martin Scorsese's Hugo led the pack, scoring 11 nods -- including best picture, director, and adapted screenplay. The silent film The Artist was a close second with 10 nominations, and War Horse and Moneyball each received six.
It was a good morning for newly minted Golden Globe winners Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Michelle Williams, Jean Dujardin, Christopher Plummer and Octavia Spencer -- all of whom received nominations for their leading and supporting roles. But the nominations also included a few surprises, like Bridesmaids star Melissa McCarthy scoring a nomination for Best Supporting Actress and Mexican actor Demian Bichir landing a Best Actor nod for the father-son drama A Better Life.
