2012 Summer Olympics Behind the Scenes Day 16

2012 Summer Olympics Behind the Scenes Day 16

Saturday, 4:00 p.m. ET/9:00 p.m. London – USA Diving is Back

I managed to get a ticket to the finals of the 10m men’s platform diving competition. First, I don’t think you realize how high above the water that platform is on TV. Second, it’s hard not to be swept up by the hometown favorites. Tom Daley, just 18, lost his dad a year ago. The entire country was pulling for him, including David Bechkam who was inside the Aquatics Center. Daley delivered, winning the bronze. "I'm just literally so happy. I really wish my dad was here to see that," said a beaming Daley after the meet. An American, David Boudia, won the gold, the first U.S. gold in diving since 2000. This meant I got to hear the national anthem for the second night in a row at these Olympics and yes, I had tears in my eyes once again.

Saturday, 2:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. ET – Mo Mania

Mo Farah, the long distance runner from Team GB, won the 10,000 meter race last weekend, and then followed that gold with a stunning win in the 5,000 meters tonight, only the seventh man to win Olympic gold in both races. Farah said his two medals are for his two girls who are expected to be born very soon. Fans – even the police – are now doing Mo's trademark move called the ‘Mobot," which is when he makes an "m" on the top of his head. After helping Team Jamaica break the world record in the men's 4 x 100-meter relay, what did Usain Bolt do? You guessed it -- the 'Mobot."

Saturday, 12:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. ET – More Shopping

With just two days left to these magical Games -- the first Olympics I ever covered, I wanted to spend plenty of time around Olympic Park, and ended up spending plenty of time inside the London 2012 store. I think it's fair to say after today's purchases, I am single-handedly keeping the British economy going.

Saturday, 11:00 a.m. ET/4:00 p.m. ET – Go Team GB

On a sunny London afternoon, just about everywhere you turned at Olympic Park, you’d see someone showing their British pride with some form of the Union Jack red, white and blue on their bodies. I talked with Londoners who said the Games have been magical for the city and the country. Even self-described cynics who criticized the cost and the expense say the Olympics are a "brilliant" accomplishment. 24 more hours to go before the closing ceremonies.

Saturday, 10:00 a.m. ET/3:00 p.m. – Doing the Usain Bolt

Want a sense of how big of a star Usain Bolt is? I saw a Lithuanian family channeling their inner Bolt, recreating his lightning pose, before the legendary track and field star makes his final competitive appearance at the London Games. He's in the 4 x 100-meter men's relay tonight.

Saturday, 8:45 a.m. ET/1:45 p.m. – Best Quote of the Day

It comes from track star Lashinda Demus, the silver medalist in the 400m hurdles. “Track and field is definitely easier than raising kids," the mother of five-year-old twins told me during an interview at the P&G Family Home. “When I first had them, I used to run to practice, like I get an hour and a half of rest no matter if it kills my body or not.” Demus said "the disappointment is over" after not getting the gold, but says she's hungrier than ever to get to the top of the medals platform in 2016. Her boys, she said, still think she's #1. "They said second is still winning," she told me with a laugh. We agree!

Saturday, 8:30 a.m. ET/1:30 p.m. – Look Who I Met!

I have interviewed Olympic stars like Ryan Lochte, Gabby Douglas and Ashton Eaton but my kids will be more impressed by who I met today at the P&G Family Home Pampers Playground. Elmo, Abby Cadabby and Grover were in the house, taking pictures with kids, even giving former Olympian Summer Sanders a few kisses.
