Alec Baldwin's Daughter Ireland: Angry Voicemail Was No Big Deal

Alec Baldwin did permanent damage to his reputation in 2007, when he left a voicemail to his eleven-year-old daughter Ireland calling her a "thoughtless little pig." Leaked online during his contentious divorce from Kim Basinger, the angry message horrified celebrity watchers. But as far as Ireland was concerned, it was just Dad flying off the handle again.

"I've always had a really great relationship with my dad," Ireland, now 16, told Page Six Magazine. "The only problem with that voicemail was that people made it out to be a way bigger deal than it was. He's said stuff like that before just because he's frustrated."

As far as Ireland was concerned, the incident was over almost before it began.

"For me it was like, 'OK, whatever.' I called him back, I was like, 'Sorry, Dad, I didn't have my phone.' That was it," she explained.

Five years later, Ireland doesn't mind joking about what happened. She and her famous dad have even considered making a YouTube video "of me calling him and yelling at him." And she's frustrated that she still has to defend her father for his past mistakes.

"Yeah, my father has said things out of anger and frustration," the 16-year-old tweeted on Thursday. "Though, so has my mom. My aunt. My mailman... YOU. We all do..."

"Here comes the angry mob with pitchforks and shot guns...." she added.

Alec Baldwin himself addressed the voicemail brouhaha in a Vanity Fair profile this summer. Though he said that his recent marriage to Hilaria Thomas had mellowed him out a lot, he vividly recalled his anger at the TMZ editor who published the voicemail online.

"I wanted to stick a knife in him and gut him and kill him, and I wanted him to die breathing his last breath looking into my eyes." Baldwin, 54, told Vanity Fair in no uncertain terms.

But Alec says that both he and Ireland have moved on, and are a very functional family, all things considered. Thomas agrees.

"No matter how much you think you understand a Baldwin, you really don't unless you are one," Alec's new wife told Page Six Magazine. "Ireland and I are pretty sane for Baldwins."
