Alicia Silverstone Defends Feeding Her Son Pre-chewed Food

Alicia Silverstone doesn't care what people think about her practice of feeding her 10-month-old son Bear Blu straight from her own mouth. Despite the backlash her video of Bear eating pre-chewed food has ensued, the vegan mama stands by her parenting decisions.

The author of The Kind Diet started the premastication controversy by posting the home video on her vegan lifestyle website The Kind Life on March 23. The 35-year-old actress gushed about Bear's penchant for attacking her mouth whenever she eats something.

"I just had a delicious breakfast of miso soup, collards and radish steamed and drizzled with flax oil, cast iron mochi with nori wrapped outside, and some grated daikon. Yum!" she wrote on her blog. "I fed Bear the mochi and a tiny bit of veggies from the soup...from my mouth to his. It's his favorite...and mine."

According to the Daily Mail, Silverstone has finally responded to the criticism. "I wasn't saying this was anything somebody should do. I wasn't trying to be independent or cause such a ruckus. I'm very glad that I did it," Silverstone said Saturday during an audience Q&A to promote her upcoming film Vamps.

"People have been feeding their kids that way for thousands for years. It's a weaning process," she said. "It's just a thing that has been going on for thousands of years and I didn't think I was inventing anything..."

Although some doctors claim the practice is unhealthy, because it passes germs from mother to baby, other medical professionals agree that the "kiss feeding" method is shared by mothers and babies around the globe.

"For conventional germs this is not a big issue. When we kiss our babies, the bugs that we all have resident in our mouths are likely to be transmitted to the baby," Dr. William Schaffner, chairman of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., told ABC News.
