January Jones transformed into "Fat Betty" on Mad Men for one simple reason: She was pregnant in real life and couldn't be pregnant on the series (again). But that doesn't mean playing an overweight version of her character (in order to mask her pregnancy pounds) was an easy task for the slender actress.
"I was in seven hours of prosthetics every morning, trying to rip off a fake chest piece so I could breastfeed," Jones said in a roundtable interview with The Hollywood Reporter. She joined fellow television actresses Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife), Claire Danes (Homeland), Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer), Emmy Rossum (Shameless) and Mireille Enos (The Killing) to discuss being leading actresses in a dramatic series.
Although Jones, 34, said she "loved" the idea of making Betty uncharacteristically heavy for a season, she had a hard time looking at herself that way.
"I didn't want to try to hide it. I thought it would become comical and weird," Jones said. "I also didn't want to have the character become pregnant because it just wouldn't make sense -- she had just had one. And I thought it would be something fun, not realizing it was going to be a pain ... It was definitely difficult, but I love what [creator Matt Weiner] did with the character's story. Everyone likes a challenge."
Jones revealed that her grandfather said she looked "a bit fuller, but still beautiful," thinking it was all pregnancy weight. "I thought I was watching Eddie Murphy in 'The Klumps' ... I was like, 'My career is over,'" she said with a laugh. Jones didn't watch the episode ahead of air and admitted it took her a while to get through it.
