The band Radiohead cancelled this weekend's sold-out concert in Toronto after a tragic stage collapse killed one crew member and injured three others.
On Saturday afternoon, the crew was completing set-up for an outdoor concert at Downsview Park when witnesses heard a loud, crackling sound, like "fireworks," coming from the stage. A nearby concert worker told the Toronto Star that the stage scaffolding began to twist, snap and collapse, until pieces of the stage fell apart "like toothpicks." The British band's drum technician, Scott Johnson, was crushed and pronounced dead at the scene. Another crew member, 45, was sent to the hospital with a non-life-threatening head injury. Two more crew members were treated for minor injuries.
Johnson was only 33 years old, and had also worked with the band Keane. Watch a video of him talking about his job, below.
Officials are not sure what caused the stage to collapse at the newly renovated concert venue. Usually, when an outdoor stage collapses, there are adverse weather conditions -- like last summer's Sugarland concert at the Indiana State Fair, where a sudden storm knocked over the stage and killed seven people. Saturday's weather in Toronto was, by all accounts, sunny and calm. On Sunday, Toronto police tweeted that they were undertaking a full investigation.
The Radiohead concert was supposed to be the final North American stop on their current tour, commemorating the 15th anniversary of the band's classic album OK Computer.
