The stars of The Real Housewives of D.C. may be hanging up their stilettos. Or they just won't be modeling them for TV viewers anymore. According to RadarOnline, the fifth city featured in the franchise didn't draw the huge-for-cable ratings that its predecessors did, and now producers plan to shut the show down.
The site also reports that the ladies involved -- Michaele Salahi, Mary Schmidt Amons, Lynda Erkiletian, Catherine "Cat" Ommanney, and Stacie Scott Turner -- have yet to be given this news. Which means they're finding out like we are -- through a gossip website. Maybe that's appropriate for a show about warring women with a knack for the sucker punch. It's still a little sad, though.
In this Access Hollywood clip from last August, Ommanney and Erkiletian sounded so confident about their season. "What we're hoping is that we raise the bar," said Erkiletian. "And that people will learn that each Housewives series is very different, based on the uniqueness of the ladies and the uniqueness of the cities that they represent." Asked whether she thought viewers would go for their DC-focused issues, she replied, "We'll find out based on the ratings just exactly what [viewers] really do love." And now we have.
The irony is that this season probably enjoyed the most advance buzz, thanks to the Salahis (Michaele and her husband Tareq) and their ethically questionable publicity stunt, crashing a white house state department dinner with cameras in tow. But if the media attention attracted viewers to the show, it didn't keep them there. The show just wasn't very interesting.
And in this world of highly dramatic dinner parties (and the violent brawls that sometimes can accompany them), boring is deadly.
