Dunder Mifflin may be losing another employee. Last week, word spread that Rainn Wilson might be leaving The Office (Thursdays, at 9 p.m. ET on NBC) for his own spin-off, and now comes news that writer/producer/cast member Mindy Kaling could be the next to jump ship.
According to Deadline.com, FOX has green lighted Kaling's single-camera comedy pilot, in which she stars as a "young Bridget Jones-type Ob/Gyn balancing personal and professional life, surrounded by quirky coworkers in a small office." Kaling will have a direct source for story ideas; her mother is an Ob/Gyn. If the pilot becomes a full-fledged series, Kaling will depart The Office, much like Wilson will do if his pilot about the Schrute family farm becomes a series.
No doubt these creative types are always coming up with new ideas. The show itself hasn't been able to contain all the plotlines they devised; producers have supplemented the on-air stories with an ongoing stream of webisodes. It's easy to imagine players like Kaling and Wilson are feeling the need to stretch their muscles a bit further.
The Office has managed to soldier on without Steve Carell, and it will do so, if necessary, without Kaling and Wilson. Bringing new characters in is always risky, but it's never a bad idea to give some new talent a chance to thrive in the creative hothouse that is this show's writer's room.
Once Kelly leaves the premises, though, Ryan will no doubt realize that she was the love of his life. Ten bucks says he'll even miss the daily recounting of tabloid gossip. And here's a prediction: Ryan himself will become the office's purveyor of news about TomKat and Brangelina.
And, if you have a girl crush on Mindy Kaling, let us know! Be sure to vote for her in iVillage's 3rd Annual Entertainment Awards!
