El DeBarge Arrested on Drug Charges

Uh-oh! "Rhythm of the Night" singer El DeBarge was arrested Tuesday in Los Angeles for drug possession with intent to sell.

TMZ is reporting that LAPD officers observed 50-year-old DeBarge (real name Eldra Patrick DeBarge) participating in what looked like a drug deal with another man at around 2 p.m. in Encino, Calif. He was taken to the nearest jail and was booked for possession of narcotics, then released on $30,000 bail. DeBarge is due back in court next month to deal with these charges.

Considering the song he is best known for is "Rhythm of the Night," maybe DeBarge should have tried to get away with this later in the evening instead of pulling the deal during the day, right off the 101 (a major freeway that cuts right through the center of Los Angeles)? We don't condone drug-selling or use, but it sounds like DeBarge wasn't being particularly cautious when trying to pull off this deal.

And he doesn't seem to have learned from past mistakes, either: This is the fourth time DeBarge, who has admitted to struggling with addiction, has been arrested for a drugs since 2001. That year, he was found in possession of cocaine and given probation. In 2006, he was arrested again for possession of a controlled substance; again, he got off with probation. But in 2008 he was arrested for a third time for possession of crack and drug paraphernalia and, as it broke the rules of his probation, was sentenced to two years in a California federal prison.

It sounds like bad luck with the law is running in DeBarge's family right now. TMZ also reports that his brother, James, is currently serving a prison sentence after being arrested for drug charges and assault with a deadly weapon. Neither DeBarge seems to be feeling the rhythm these days.
