What's black and blue and read all over? Justin Bieber's on the cover of Complex magazine! In his photo shoot for the magazine's 10th anniversary issue, the 18-year-old pop star gets beat up and bloodied as he fake-boxes in a tuxedo. (Watch the behind-the-scenes video below!)
The photo shoot was inspired by Bieber's upcoming album, Believe, which the magazine calls a "second round KO." (In other words: it's as much of a knockout as 2009's My World.) In the accompanying interview, the young pop star opens up about his struggles with fame -- including his efforts to keep his relationship with Selena Gomez private.
"There’s no way to hide the relationship completely, because then it would be unfair to us," explains the singer, who has declined to speak about Gomez in past interviews.
"It’s like, 'You take this car, and I’ll take this car, and then we’ll meet up at the spot. Then, you go in this door, I’ll go in this door. We’ll end up crossing ways. You get back in this car. We’ll cross over, do a James Bond. You go through the kitchen. I’ll go through the back area. Then we’ll meet in the dressing room and see each other,'" Bieber elaborates. "At that point, it’s not even a relationship. You’re just hiding from everyone. That’s unfair and unhealthy, man."
He may have accepted that he can't hide his personal life, but Bieber still has issues with the paparazzi who document his every move.
"It pisses me off so much when people say, 'Get over it, Justin. You’re famous. People are going to take your picture. Suck it up, you’re rich,'" he says. "It’s like, 'Yo, I just got off an eight-hour flight. I’m tired and my eyes have bags under them. I’m not trying to take pictures. I’m not going to come to your house, wake you up, and start snapping your picture.'"
That said, he regrets giving a group of photographers the finger last March, since he doesn't want to give younger fans "the wrong impression." As for older fans, Justin knows that they still consider songs like "Baby" to be guilty pleasures -- which he's hoping to change with the more grown-up sound of Believe.
"I feel like it’s my responsibility to be the greatest I can be. If I start making terrible music, I don’t expect people to like me," Justin says. "People just need to take a chance and listen. If they don’t want to take a chance, then I don’t know. That’s going to be the biggest problem, to make them feel like it’s cool for them to like my music."
"Boyfriend," Bieber's first single from the upcoming album, drops on March 26.
