Angelina Jolie took her older kids on a special field trip Monday: a visit to the Les Miserables set to hang out with her celebrity pal Russell Crowe.
While in the U.K. working on her new film Maleficent, the newly engaged actress, 36, spent the day hanging out with Crowe and her kids Maddox, 10, Pax, 8 and Zahara, 7, on April 30.
According to Us Weekly, the set visit was Crowe's idea. A source close to the famous family of eight tells Us that Crowe, 48, personally invited Jolie to check out the filming of Les Miserables at England's Pinewood Studios. So the working mother decided to take three of her six children for the experience.
"Russell and Angelina caught up at the F Stage, where Les Mis is being shot," the insider tells Us, adding that Jolie and her kids watched Crowe act and sing (as tunnel-visioned Inspector Javert) on the musical's set for almost an hour.
"The kids were all fitted with [protective] ear defenders, because it's quite a loud sound stage. It was really exciting for the children to see the movie being shot."
Jolie and her family will soon become well acquainted with Pinewood Studios themselves, since that's where Maleficent will shoot when production kicks into high gear. The insider says Jolie is "very excited about the film and in such a great mood."
As for Crowe and the Jolie-Pitts -- who knew they were such good buddies? Les Miserables (which stars Crowe, Hugh Jackman, and Anne Hathaway) hits theaters Dec. 14, 2012.
