Screw You MPAA! AMC Theaters to Screen NC-17 Cut of 'Hatchet II'

Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy, ExhibitionI was pretty impressed with Adam Green's throwback slasher flick Hatchet. While the title has divided genre fans in a lot of instances (some found it corny), I think Green's heart was in the right place and the film was a gory good time. So, naturally, I'm excited about Hatchet II -- the filmmaker's follow-up and the continuation of the Victor Crowley saga.

The film is set to make it's big screen debut on October 1st -- just in time to kick off an exciting Halloween season. The best part of this news is that Green and distributor Dark Sky Films will be releasing Hatchet II unrated -- with all the gore and Victor Crowley mayhem intact and the way it was meant to be seen!

AMC Theaters will be showing the unrated cut of the film as part of its AMC Independent program. This means the uncut version of Hatchet II will be shown theatrically in the top 20 markets in the United States.

Justin Bieber Wants to Play Danny Zuko in 'Grease' Remake

Filed under: Comedy, Music & Musicals, Casting, RumorMonger, Celebrities and Controversy, Newsstand, Remakes and SequelsIt's interesting when a story goes from a star joking or idly mentioning an off-the-cuff idea to a full-blown story that is circulating the Internet. Justin Bieber told The Sun that he'd love to star in a remake of Grease as bad boy Danny Zuko, with Miley Cyrus as the innocent Sandy Olsson. Of course, it seems as though Cyrus is eager to shed her Sandy-like goody two-shoes rep as rumors fly about her upcoming booze-chugging, weed-puffing, cooter-flashing teen in LOL. (Read more about her character's shenanigans here.) And wouldn't it be super, the dreamy pop star mused, if Susan Boyle could star as Principal McGee? That sounds swell! But as irresistible an opportunity as it is to Photoshop the Bieb's head onto John Travolta's body, his dreams of crooning "Summer Nights" probably ain't happening any time soon.*

Alice Eve Quit 'X-Men'? May Be 'Avengers' Villain Instead?

Filed under: Casting, Paramount, Celebrities and Controversy, 20th Century Fox, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and SequelsThe other night when report came in that January Jones was cast as Emma Frost in X-Men: First Class, I asked the obvious and rhetorical question, "so apparently Alice Eve did not get the part?" Eve had previously been linked to the role with enough certainty that everyone was including her as a known member of the ensemble cast. Then, this Jones news came out of nowhere. Well, ComicBookMovie.com has exclusive information from an anonymous source at Marvel via a volunteer contributor that Eve was signed on but requested to be let out of her contract because she wasn't happy with the latest script changes. She was in Sex and the City 2, by the way, if that says anything about how much worse First Class might be.

If that's not rumor enough for you, the site also claims Marvel is interested in her for a minor villain role in The Avengers. Because this unnamed character is said to be part of the Thor comics, The Feed logically presumes she'd play The Enchantress, which also would fit with Loki being that film's main villain, and could maybe lead to a bigger part in Thor 2. It could all depend on just what comic book character she would prefer. ComicBookMovie.com also says she's up for Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman in Fox's Fantastic Four Reborn (the franchise reboot), in which she'd get to act alongside a reportedly 100% CGI version of The Thing.

Which superhero movie do you think she's best to stick with? Feel free to suggest roles/films she's not yet rumored for. Permalink | Email this | Comments

'Blair Witch' Director Returns for 'The Possession'

Filed under: Horror, DealsI wanted to put the cap on POV news this week with Chronicle, but when it comes to a project being directed by Eduardo Sanchez, I think I can make room for one more. The guy hasn't delivered one widely successful film since The Blair Witch Project back in 1999, but that one alone makes any other project he gets his hands on instantly intriguing and that's why I'll be keeping a close eye on Possession. According to Variety, that'll be Sanchez's next venture behind the lens and it actually doesn't stray too far from the concept that brought him all the notoriety to begin with.

Sanchez co-wrote the script with Jamie Nash and it's about "the thin line between demonic possession and psychosis, starts off as a simple horror film about things that go bump in the night but slowly turns into a thriller about the evil power that exists inside one troubled young woman." Amber Entertainment and Haxan Films are the companies behind this one. Haxan actually produced Blair Witch way back when, so perhaps they're hoping lightening can strike twice. The folks over there better keep their fingers crossed tight because they also backed Sanchez's critical flop, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (which Sanchez only executive produced) and the widely unnoticed Altered and Seventh Moon.Continue reading 'Blair Witch' Director Returns for 'The Possession' Permalink | Email this | Comments

Potentially Bogus Paramount Document Reveals Some Funny Stuff

Filed under: Casting, Deals, RumorMonger, ScriptsThere's nothing like leaked communications to excite your movie fandom. A detailed e-mail has hit the Internet, one that reveals a whole lot of juicy info about Paramount's upcoming cinematic slate ... if it turns out to be true. We're not talking about a handful of features, but tidbits on over thirty projects. It details books that are starting to be adapted, sequels that are in the works, stars attached to gigs, and even which stars directors are meeting with.

There's a little bit of everything on this sucker -- Kathryn Bigelow's latest, Zoolander, Twilight Zone, and even an upcoming draft for Baywatch: The Movie. Yeah.

The biggest nugget comes by way of Kathryn Bigelow. It's been a year since her next feature was announced -- the action-adventure flick called Triple Frontier -- and the e-mail states that they want to start production in December or January. Furthermore, she's talking with some really big names to lead this affair, and has met with Sean Penn, Will Smith, Javier Bardem, and Christian Bale for the ensemble cast. (Rumors for some of these names began earlier this year.)Continue reading Potentially Bogus Paramount Document Reveals Some Funny Stuff Permalink | Email this | Comments

Is Jerry Bruckheimer's Billion-Dollar Touch Gone?

Filed under: Deals, Disney, Box Office, DistributionHas Jerry Bruckheimer lost the ability to turn in money-churning blockbuster after money-churning blockbuster? That's the theory posited in a fascinating piece on The Hollywood Reporter today, which points to a string of four successive flops from the uber-producer behind such ever-green franchises as Pirates of the Caribbean, National Treasure and Bad Boys.

But this past weekend's poor performance for The Sorcerer's Apprentice - which Disney had hoped would start another franchise printing press of cash - hasn't helped the producer. We reported way back in November 2005 that Disney were signing Bruckheimer into a 5-year deal that was the largest in its history. If that deal is coming to an end, it stands to reason that a string of flops on his recent CV may not help his chances of renewing it at that same sort of scale.Continue reading Is Jerry Bruckheimer's Billion-Dollar Touch Gone? Robert Pattinson is Glamour's Sexiest Man; 'Eclipse' Eclipses 'New Moon'

Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy, Box Office, FandomIt's been a good week for the world of Twilight. As Twi-hards are relishing the first confirmations that the film's stars are, indeed, together, there are other goodies for the crew to rejoice about.

First, Robert Pattinson has topped Glamour's 50 Sexiest Men of 2010, beating everyone from Brad Pitt and Will Smith to Justin Bieber and fellow Twilight hunks. Yes, this includes Taylor Lautner, who came in #2. Sorry Team Jacob, Team Edward gets the bragging rights in this round. Topping off this upset, media vamps grabbed all of the top spots, with Xavier Samuel and Kellan Lutz sneaking in for Twilight fame and Ian Somerhalder popping in-between (Vampire Diaries). Like it or not, vampires are here to stay ... for now.

Next, Eclipse is about to de-throne New Moon.Continue reading Robert Pattinson is Glamour's Sexiest Man; 'Eclipse' Eclipses 'New Moon' Permalink | Email this | Comments

Step Up 3D

Coming off like some wild, two-bit half hour slice of late night zealotry on public access television, Step Up 3D is quite possibly the least self-aware film I have ever seen. It gushes about dance moves changing the world, about step battles setting an entire generation free, all the while, thrusting, gyrating, twisting and shimmying with a lunatic confidence only known to nave idealists and the few people who really have figured it all out.

Are Any Animated Films in 3D Still Worth It?

Filed under: Animation, Box Office, Family Films

While one animated film topped the box office this past weekend, another became the highest-grossing movie of the year (so far, though likely it's to stay this way through the second half of 2010). This isn't surprising given that nearly every animated feature released these days is done so in 3D, which greatly magnifies their box office take because of the $3 or so surcharge added to the ticket price. But will it and should it continue this way? The profits say yes but the audience might be saying no.

For example, although I've heard great things about Despicable Me, which over the weekend earned $60 million -- more than double the take of fellow opener Predators -- I also hear that there's absolutely no reason to see it in 3D other than to appreciate some in-your-face use of the format during the end credits. Fortunately there is still the 2D version available in most multiplexes, despite the fact that years ago industry leaders predicted and expected these films to be exclusive to 3D screens.Continue reading Are Any Animated Films in 3D Still Worth It? Cinematical Late Night: Age of the Dragons, Wesley Snipes, Gordon-Levitt's Natural Woman

- If you've been curious about Wesley Snipes tax evasion case, the actor has had the September 2nd start date of his three year sentence delayed indefinitely until the court can make a ruling on a few more pending motions in his case. I say he uses the time to hire a camera crew, make a break for it, film it, and release that as a movie. It'd do gangbusters, I tells ya'!

Hanks/Bullock 9/11 Drama to Win All the Oscars in 2012

Filed under: Drama, Casting, Deals, New ReleasesI have bad news for all the other movies scheduled to come out in 2011. A film adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's book Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is coming together, and it looks like the kind of thing from which we'll be seeing many clips at the next year's Oscars.

Eric Roth, who wrote Forrest Gump, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Insider, Munich, and Ali, has written the screenplay, based on the 2005 novel about a 9-year-old boy who finds a key that belonged to his father, who died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The film will be produced by Scott Rudin (No Country for Old Men, The Hours, The Truman Show) and directed by Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours, The Reader). Variety reports that Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock are about to sign on as the stars. And the name of the little boy in the story? Oskar.

So this will either be one of the 2011's major Academy Awards contenders, or it will be the film that everyone thinks is going to be a contender and then isn't. Like Benjamin Button, The Truman Show, and The Reader. (Uh-oh...)Continue reading Hanks/Bullock 9/11 Drama to Win All the Oscars in 2012 Permalink | Email this | Comments

Blockbuster and Comcast Team for DVDsByMail.com

Filed under: Deals, Newsstand, Home Entertainment

If Lex Luthor and Dr. Doom were to combine forces to spread malevolence and despair across the globe, I'm not sure they'd be quite as evil as the merging of Blockbuster and Comcast. Luckily for all of us, Blockbuster Video and Comcast aren't really merging into one mega-corporation hellbent on sowing the seeds of customer dissatisfaction in their wake, but the duo is teaming up for an online DVD rental by mail program called DVDsByMail.com.

With Netflix entering the great white north (Canada) and Redbox mulling over their online options, Blockbuster is launching this last-ditch effort to stay afloat and stave off their impending bankruptcy. The site, which states that the service is currently in beta, isn't really any different from Blockbuster's already in place online rental program. However, if you're a Comcast customer, you get a discount for using the service. Apparently, if you're not a Comcast customer, there's no deal for you.

After clinging desperately to their brick-and-mortar stores, outrageous prices, and outdated late fee system, it appears as though Blockbuster has finally realized that online DVD rentals are the wave of now. Add in their deals with certain studios to get new releases ahead of Netflix and Redbox and it seems like they might have finally figured out what they're doing. The question is, is it too late?

What do you think? Would you go back to renting from Blockbuster if they had lower prices than Netflix and movies a few weeks in advance? I think The Better Business Bureau better hire a truckload of new staffers to deal with all the customer service complaints bound to emerge when these two companies team up on anything.

Doc Talk: Should Documentaries Be Excused From the MPAA?

Filed under: Documentary, Foreign Language, Independent, Celebrities and Controversy, NSFW, Politics, Cinematical Indie

The other night, basic cable viewers were promised/warned about "brief nudity" in the latest episode of Mad Men. It turned out to be just some artistic nudes in a portfolio, certainly no more warranting of "viewer discretion" advisement than the show's increased inclusion of words like "sh*t" and "dick" and references to handjobs. Never mind that some people see all the smoking and drinking as worse than any nudity, sexual innuendo or bad language. But the issue with the series' content crept into my thoughts about the ratings controversies of two new documentaries, A Film Unfinished and The Tillman Story, both of which hit theaters this week.

Monika adequately covered the story with the former film, a necessary look at propaganda footage shot in the Warsaw ghetto by the Nazis, which will likely and deservedly be a contender for the feature documentary Oscar, and not just because it deals with the Holocaust. The MPAA stamped it with an R for "disturbing images of holocaust atrocities including graphic nudity," which will apparently keep it from being shown in classrooms, where it is most appropriate. As for the latter, the profuse cursing by Pat Tillman's family members is so natural that I first didn't even recall that's the reason for its unwelcome R-rating.

These two important films (see our reviews here and here) are only the latest victims of the MPAA's unfairness, but because they're non-fiction works, and educational and/or journalistic ones at that, I need to propose the following: documentaries should be excused from the ratings system.Continue reading Doc Talk: Should Documentaries Be Excused From the MPAA? 'A Film Unfinished' Loses Appeal; MPAA Continues to Ignore Precedent

Filed under: Documentary, Celebrities and Controversy, PoliticsOn Monday, I reported that Yael Hersonski's gripping Holocaust documentary, A Film Unfinished, was given an R by the MPAA for "disturbing images of holocaust atrocities including graphic nudity." The filmmaker, Oscilloscope Laboratories, and Warsaw Ghetto survivor Hana Avrutzky (by means of a letter) fought the decision, asking the appeals board to "consider the context of the nudity in the film in terms of its historical and educational importance" so that viewers across the country could have unrestricted access to the material.

But the board upheld the decision, voting 12 to 3 in favor of the R rating. It's another example of the MPAA ignoring precedent and voting by whim, as the Oscar-winning Steven Spielberg film, The Last Days, was given a PG-13 for "graphic images and descriptions of Holocaust atrocities."Continue reading 'A Film Unfinished' Loses Appeal; MPAA Continues to Ignore Precedent Permalink | Email this | Comments

Graphic Novel 'Last Man Standing' Sells to Paramount

Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Thrillers, Deals, Comic/Superhero/Geek

This year's San Diego Comic-Con might be a distant memory for some (or most), but production deals are still happening. In the latest news, Paramount picked up the rights to writer-illustrator Dan LuVisi's two-year-and-a-half-in-the-making, 230-page graphic novel, Last Man Standing. According to Deadline, Paramount has purchased the rights to develop the title as a "multi-platform franchise property." As described on publisher Heavy Metal's website, Last Man Standing is less a straight-up story than a prologue and bible. Heavy Metal, owned by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman, expects to expand the graphic novel into an ongoing comic-book series. Last Man Standing sold out within two hours of going on sale at Comic-Con. A new printing will be available in early September for purchase through Heavy Metal's website.Continue reading Graphic Novel 'Last Man Standing' Sells to Paramount Permalink | Email this | Comments

But now there's an added humiliation.
