Savannah Guthrie Replacing Ann Curry on Today

If you own a computer or a TV set, then you probably know: This week's changing of the guard at Today has been followed with some pretty intense media interest. News that producers were replacing Ann Curry was leaked and then speculated upon for days; on Thursday, she tearfully confirmed it and bid viewers goodbye. 

When Today kicked off Friday morning, the opening sequence ran without the usual voiceover announcing the names of the co-anchors, and their names did not appear on the screen. When the camera settled on the anchor desk, Curry's widely reported successor, Savannah Guthrie, was in her seat. Weirdly, no one acknowledged the change. 

But on Friday morning, NBC confirmed Guthrie would be officially sitting in the anchor chair. "In just a few short years Savannah has become a standout member of the news division as well as the ultimate team player," NBC News President Steve Capus said in a statement on Friday. "She's got an undeniable range, and she's earned the trust of the news community, her colleagues and our viewers alike. I couldn't be happier for Savannah and the entire Today team."

The 40-year-old news anchor, who's been co-anchoring the 9 a.m. news hour on Today since August 2011, will also continue her role as NBC News chief legal correspondent. 

And as for Curry, she announced on Thursday that she'll be Today's anchor at large and national and international correspondent for NBC News.

"To those of you who saw me as a groundbreaker, I am sorry that could not carry the ball across the finish line -- but, man, did I try," Curry said on Thursday, acknowledging her ratings-challenged year as cohost.
