So Long, McSteamy! Eric Dane Is Leaving 'Grey’s Anatomy'

Dr. McSteamy is no longer in the house. After six year of playing plastic surgeon Mark Sloan on the hit medical drama Grey's Anatomy, Eric Dane has announced that he's leaving the show.

"I am extremely grateful to everyone at Grey’s, ABC and Shondaland [Productions] for the experience and memories I have had over the course of this run," the 39-year-old actor told TVLine on Thursday. "It has been wonderful to work alongside and learn from a creative force such as Shonda Rhimes."

As for Grey's Anatomy creator Rhimes, she assures fans that Dane "did not come to this decision lightly," saying that "after much consideration and conversations, he and I have decided that this is the right time for his storyline to end." She says that Dr. Sloan remains "one of the most beloved characters" on the drama.

Unlike some of his coworkers (including the love of his life, played by Chyler Leigh), Dr. Sloan did survive the tragic season 8 finale. Dane's character, who was introduced at the end of season 2, is expected to appear in a few more episodes to wrap up his storyline.

"We’re a big family here at Grey’s with a long history together and Eric will always remain an important part of our family," Rhimes said of her star. "I wish him the best and I look forward to watching him as he continues to steam up the big and small screen."

The actor will now be free to spend some more time with his real-life wife Rebecca Gayheart and their two daughters, 2-year-old Billie and 7-month-old Georgia.
