Tom Cruise is trying as hard as the media is to figure out what went wrong in his marriage to Katie Holmes.
Although the 50-year-old movie star looked happy when he was finally reunited with his 6-year-old daughter Suri in New York City on July 17, things have been rough for Cruise since Holmes, 33, blindsided him with her divorce filing on June 28.
"[Tom] was thinking, 'What did I not see?'" a source who knows the ex-couple tells People of Cruise's reaction to the shocking turn of events. Adding to that anguish was the actor's month-long separation from Suri.
"He's wanted to see her as fast as possible since this started," another source tells the magazine, explaining that Cruise's commitment to filming the sci-fi thriller Oblivion in Iceland and California was the main obstacle keeping them apart. "He couldn't shut down production, cost people their jobs. People count on him."
Although it took awhile for Tom and Suri to reunite for the first time, a second visit probably won't be far off. Cruise and Holmes reached a divorce settlement on July in a lightning-quick 11 days, with Holmes reportedly getting primary custody of Suri, and Cruise retaining generous visitation rights.
That said, if Cruise, who resides primarily in Los Angeles, wants to see Suri regularly, he'll likely have to travel to the Big Apple to do so. Holmes and Suri have moved into a new N.Y.C. apartment following the divorce filing, and Katie has already enrolled Suri in a Manhattan Catholic school for the fall term.
Suri's enrollment in Catholic school suggests that Holmes is eager to distnace the ex-couple's daughter from Scientology -- but don't expect Tom to stop practicing the religion.
In fact, the actor has turned to his mother, his three sisters and his adopted children Connor, 17, and Isabella, 19 -- all of whom practice Scientology -- for support in his time of need. "Tom is not ashamed of his beliefs," a source tells People, "and won't hide them from his daughter."
It's clear from the smile on Cruise's face in the pictures snapped of him with Suri in N.Y.C. this week that he's just happy to be reunited with his daughter. Divorce is never easy for anyone, no matter how quickly it comes together, and it must be especially confusing for Suri. We're glad that Cruise and Holmes seem to have put their daughter first instead of making her the bargaining chip in what could have been a messy split. Whatever the cause of Holmes' divorce filing, it's clear that their daughter is more important to them than any drama.
"Tom tried his best to do what's right for Suri," his longtime friend and lawyer Bert Fields said of the quick settlement, adding that Cruise is not "bitter" -- just "sad."
