Courteney Cox: David Arquette Is "My Very Best Friend"

Nearly every celeb couple who breaks up claims the split was "amiable" -- but Courteney Cox and David Arquette may be the only ones who mean it. At a recent promo event for her ABC show Cougar Town, Cox, 47, gushed to People about how close she is to her estranged husband.

"He's my favorite person in the world," says Cox, who separated from Arquette in fall 2010 after 11 years of marriage. "He's my best friend. No matter what happens in our future, he's my very best friend."

Cox and Arquette's commitment to each other is sweet -- and totally confusing. When the couple announced their separation in 2010, it seemed certain that they'd get back together. Arquette went on The Oprah Winfrey Show and said he wanted to save his marriage, while Cox told Harper's Bazaar that she'd feel like a failure if she and David got divorced. They continued to not only run their production company together, but to take family vacations with 7-year-old daughter Coco. And Arquette set out to get sober, fixing a problem that no doubt strained their relationship.

But now that more than a year has passed, Courteney and David don't seem any closer to reconciliation. Arquette is in a new relationship with Christina McLarty, and flat-out told Howard Stern in November that things were over with his wife.

"She was sad, we were both sad," he said, relating Courtney's reaction when he told her he was in love with McLarty. "We both cried."

Maybe they cried -- but what they didn't do was file for divorce. As of right now, the self-proclaimed best friends are still happily unmarried and working alongside one another at Coquette productions. They even recently sold a TV show to NBC about a couple that splits after 10 years and remains friends.

"It's not really about David and me, but it's something we related to and we thought we should tell a story about people who could actually get along after being separated," Cox told People.

We won't pretend to understand what's going on with these two. But for the sake of their daughter, it's awesome that they're managing to stay in each another's lives so effortlessly. It seems to be good for David, too; the actor just celebrated his first full year of sobriety last week, by sharing dinner with his biggest supporter: his wife.
