Jimmy Kimmel is adding another night of live TV to his busy schedule: the 2012 Emmys! The late-night funnyman has been tapped to host the 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, which will take place on Sept. 23 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.
"I hope to be able to do for the Emmys this year what Eddie Murphy did for the Oscars," Kimmel joked in a statement.
Murphy, as you may recall, backed out of hosting the 2012 Oscars and was replaced by Billy Crystal. Maybe Jimmy Fallon should stay close to the phone?
All joking aside, Kimmel is an excellent choice for hosting this year's Emmys. Believe it or not, Jimmy Kimmel Live! is the longest-running late-night show in ABC history. Over nine years, Kimmel has proved that he can be funny in any situation, whether chatting with the cast of Twilight or taking on the news media, Jon Stewart-style.
But the best thing about Jimmy Kimmel, obviously, is his ability to convince really famous celebrities to do really ridiculous things. Remember when his then-girlfriend Sarah Silverman bragged on his show (in song!) that she was f***ing Matt Damon? Or when Lindsay Lohan took a break from probation to advertise "Humpilates" with half a dozen other starlets? And were there any celebrities who didn't show up to make fun of themselves in his Oscar-night parody Movie: The Movie? Kimmel has a way of bringing out the funny in the rich and famous -- which is a great skill for any awards-show host. (And we can prove it: Here's Kimmel grilling the Wu-Tang Clan about the Jonas Brothers when he hosted the American Music Awards in 2008.)
Although the Emmys will be Kimmel's biggest hosting gig ever, he gets to warm up by hosting the prestigious White House Correspondent's Dinner in April. We look forward to seeing him make President Obama laugh -- and we'll be crossing our fingers for an Emmy-themed YouTube challenge come fall!
