Lady Gaga Defends Her Right to Wear Fur

The famous PETA slogan says, "I'd rather go naked than wear fur." But Lady Gaga would rather go naked and wear fur.

The pop star has come under fire from animal rights activists for her recent wardrobe choices, including several coats that appear to be made of real fur. A member of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) published an open letter demanding answers from Gaga, in hopes that the singer -- who told Ellen DeGeneres in 2009 that she "hates fur"-- has been passing off convincing fake furs as the real deal.

"We were thrilled when Gaga went on Ellen and told her she doesn’t wear fur," the PETA officer said in a follow-up radio interview on Tuesday. "And so, we were quite surprised this past year when we started seeing her wearing fur coats, and we wrote her so many letters asking if they were fake or not. We just got no reply...Fall is coming and we need to know if she is a turncoat or not."

At first, the singer tried to stay out of the fray with a tongue-in-cheek response. "For those press and such who are writing about whether or not my fur is actually real, please don't forget to credit the designer HERMES. Thank You!" she tweeted. (By ID'ing the designer, Gaga led some fashion bloggers to conclude that her fur was "high-pile," a.k.a. fake.)

Soon afterwards, she posted a more sincere reply on her Little Monsters website.

"To the fans. I want you to know that I care deeply about your feelings and views, and I will always support your philosophies about life," Gaga wrote. "We've been having over-arching conversations about society, equality, and politics for the past five years, and we should continue. I do not however support violent, abusive, and childish campaigns for ANY CAUSE. Particularly one that I respect. 'Animal Rights.'"

As for the question of whether her furs are real, Gaga issued a pointed "no comment."

"I would think it hypocritical not to acknowledge the python, ostrich, cow hide, leather, lamb, alligator, 'kermit' and not to mention meat, that I have already worn," she explained. "This should already put me in a category as one who appreciates and adores the beauty of animals in fashion, but am not a strict vegan."

The pop star conceded that she has "truly always stayed away from skinned fur," but said that her morals aren't "rigid" enough to make her resist "an absolute art piece of a coat."

"I have no chains about this. You see a carcass, I see a museum pièce de résistance," she wrote. "But I am truly sorry to fans who are upset by this, it's a fair and applaudable feeling about the health and safety of animals. I respect your views, please respect mine."

Before signing off, Gaga took a moment to condemn the activists who have threatened to "flour-bomb" her, a la Kim Kardashian.

"And to campaigners, Save your flour to make bread for the children who are hungry. And Kim Kardashian is fabulous," she concluded.

Gaga's refusal to apologize for her fur-wearing ways has disappointed some fans, who have bombarded her Facebook page with negative comments. Really, though -- coming from the lady who wore raw meat to an awards ceremony, is a fur coat so surprising?
