Halle Berry better get out her wallet. The New Year's Eve actress has reportedly been ordered to pay $20,000 a month in child support to her ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry, for the care of their daughter Nahla, 4. Aubry, a French-Canadian model, requested the shocking amount of money earlier this year, saying that he needed it to give Nahla a "proper" home. Apparently, the judge agreed, making a quarter-of-a-million dollar dent in Berry's annual paycheck.
It's the latest blow in a bitter custody battle that has been going on since the couple split up at the end of 2010. Last February, Aubry filed for sole custody of Nahla, then decided to settle the matter with Berry privately. That didn't last long. A few months later, Berry accused Aubry of child neglect in family court. Then in January, Nahla's father was investigated for child endangerment after allegedly getting violent with Nahla's nanny. Aubry's request for child support was granted only after those charges were dropped.
Even with the major child support payout, there's another battle looming in the Nahla wars. Berry wants to move to France with fiance Olivier Martinez, and has requested full custody of her daughter so they can move as a family. Aubrey, understandably, wants to keep Nahla close to home. But Berry has some pretty compelling reasons to flee the country. The actress has two stalkers who were recently released from a mental institution and jail, respectively, so she doesn't feel entirely safe in Hollywood. Reportedly, she believes Nahla would be proteced by France's tough paparazzi laws. (That's one reason that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt chose to set up house in France before their twins were born.)
The judge will be deciding Nahla's custody arrangement later this month. Let's hope everyone continues to act in this little girl's best interests.
